Just a short recap of this game won by Southwestern University.
I arrived towards the end of the 3rd quarter and the score was very close. In fact according to the stat sheet, SWU held a 1 point lead at the half 40-39. The end of the 3rd quarter saw SWU ahead 57-56. See how close it was...
Justine Aboude, who started at center, had a very good game today with 5 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals in 14 minutes of action. He helped the Cobras stay in the thick of things in the 3rd and 4th quarter while Mbala rested on the bench.
Rookie Ben Mbala had a monster game today with 41 points, 16 rebounds, and 4 blocks (and 0 fouls) in 41 minutes. He spearheaded the Cobra's offense when it mattered and delivered. His shooting percentages were impressive as well, 48.1% (13 of 27) from the field and 83.8 from the line (15 of 18).
He had this huge dunk in the 4th period from a steal and a coast-to-coast drive. I wish the ball hadn't covered his face.
UST got big games from Jeric Teng, 20 points, 11 rebounds; and Aljon Mariano 20 points 8 rebounds.
However, the Tigers missed the services of Karim Abdul and Kevin Ferrer today. The game outcome could have been different if only one of them were around.
Regulation ended in a 77 all deadlock that forced the game into overtime.
It was also close in the extra period and with aabout 30 seconds left to play, shifty point guard Monbert Arong (17 points, 5 boards) threw up a trey that swished cleanly through the basket for a 92-89 advantage. Here he is celebrating after the shot.
UST had possession for the last few seconds and tried to buy a basket off a three point try by fortuna which bounced out and into the hands of Mariano whose attempt in turn overshot the ring. It was technically a non-bearing game as UST has already made the finals but it was a good hard fought win by SWU. They should take this win home with them and build on it.
This photo is of starting forward Bernie Bregondo (11 points, 2 rebounds) consoling Aljon Mariano right after the buzzer sounded.
I have a strong feeling SWU will be back next year for the 2013 edition of the PCCL...
Notes.
It's Jeric Fortuna's birthday today and a fan was trying to get his attention with this message...
